“In 1814 in Corfu (three years after Λυρικά) Vilaras published a strange booklet. The Ρομέικη γλόσσα, entirely written in a revolutionary spelling system, almost phonetic and of course without stresses and spirits. This system and its usefullness is explained in an introductive ‘μικρή ορμήνεια’ [small explanation] and then as samples rather of the “romeiki language” in poetry and prose, he publishes four original poems and translations of Anacreon, Plato and Thoukededes.[…] The situation here is also the same as that in Christopoulos; the same world of classicist allegories, the same light, playful mood. However Vilaras is originally “arcadic"; Chloe, Phyllis, Thyrsis, Daphne reappear in his lines, the “arcadian” mood is here more genuine and assimilated. The «Η Άνοιξη» [Spring], imitates perhaps a relevant Italian poem, but it still preserves and undoubted originality:

Η γλυκυτάτη άνοιξη

Με τ’ άνθη στολισμένη

Ροδοστεφανωμένη

Τη γη γλυκοτηράει.

 

Κι η γη τη χλόη ντύνεται

Τα δάση της ισκιώνουν,

Τα κρύα χιόνια λιώνουν,

Ο ουρανός γελάει.

 

The breath of spring when it comes cool straight from nature, without freezing it through symbols and allegories; and versification with its charming leanness seems to follow the path paved by Italians and not the established and somewhat stiff poetry of Phanariots. […] Vilaras is an exuberant and dynamic personality; in the language question (as well as in the spelling question) he surpasses mediocrity and takes a step forward towards extreme and revolutionary solutions. Satire, good-natured but biting, plays a key role in his work, either when he writes pure poems either when he versifies “Mythsbased on the original myths of Aesop or La Fontaine». pp. 135 – 136.
